Lisdexamfetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Cathinone, a constituent of khat, appears to have sympathomimetic effects and can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, combining khat with other central nervous system (CNS) stimulant drugs might increase the risk of cardiovascular toxicity. Some CNS stimulants include nicotine, cocaine, sympathomimetic amines, and amphetamines.

Here's the simple version: Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is itself a stimulant. Once your body activates it, it ramps up norepinephrine and dopamine, which can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. Khat does very much the same thing through its main chemical, cathinone, which acts a lot like an amphetamine. So you'd essentially be stacking two stimulants on top of each other.

The concern is that the heart-related effects could pile up: a racing or pounding heart, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, anxiety, or trouble sleeping. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical interaction based on how both substances work, not hard clinical proof. Still, doubling up on stimulants is worth avoiding. Keep in mind khat is also illegal in the U.S. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with your Vyvanse.

Lisdexamfetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults and children age 6 and older. It is also approved to treat moderate to severe binge eating disorder (BED) in adults.

It is not approved or recommended for weight loss, and its safety and effectiveness for treating obesity have not been established. It is not recommended in children under 6 years old.
