Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair: acitretin (Soriatane) can already make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, so it's easy to burn faster than you'd expect. Masterwort contains furanocoumarins, the same kind of plant compounds that also boost sun sensitivity. Put the two together and you may stack one sun-sensitizing effect on top of another.

This concern is based on how these compounds behave (it's theoretical pharmacology, not hard clinical proof), but the practical risk is real and easy to picture: quicker, worse sunburns, redness, or blistering, even with modest sun exposure. Acitretin isn't a prodrug here, so this is about additive sun sensitivity, not changing the drug's blood levels. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and stay diligent with sunscreen and protective clothing.

What Is Acitretin Used For?

Brand name: Soriatane

Acitretin capsules are approved to treat severe psoriasis in adults. It is typically reserved for patients whose psoriasis has not responded to other treatments, or when other treatments are not appropriate options.

Because of serious risks — including the risk of severe birth defects — acitretin is not a first-line choice. In women who could become pregnant, it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks and strict pregnancy-prevention measures are in place.
