Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't about how your body breaks down nortriptyline. It's about your skin. Nortriptyline can make some people more sensitive to sunlight, and masterwort contains furanocoumarins, the same plant chemicals that can do the same thing. Put the two together and the effects may add up, meaning you could sunburn faster or react more strongly to UV light than you'd expect.

I want to be honest with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than real reports of trouble. It still makes sense to play it safe with sunscreen, a hat, and shade. Before pairing them, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Masterwort

What is Masterwort?

Masterwort
  • Digestive upset
  • Mild anxiety and tension
  • Skin complaints
  • Respiratory and cough relief
  • Traditional tonic

Masterwort (Heracleum sphondylium), a plant in the carrot family, has a long folk-medicine history for digestion, nerves, and skin. Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
