Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing masterwort with desipramine: this isn't about how your body breaks the drug down or how strong it is. It's a skin issue. Masterwort contains furanocoumarins, plant chemicals that can make your skin react more to sunlight. Desipramine can also cause a little extra sun sensitivity on its own, so using both together may add up and make sunburn more likely.

In real life, that could mean burning faster than usual or getting a rash on sun-exposed skin. This concern is based on how these substances behave rather than strong studies, so don't panic. If you do use both, be smart about sunscreen and covering up, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Masterwort

What is Masterwort?

Masterwort
  • Digestive upset
  • Mild anxiety and tension
  • Skin complaints
  • Respiratory and cough relief
  • Traditional tonic

Masterwort (Heracleum sphondylium), a plant in the carrot family, has a long folk-medicine history for digestion, nerves, and skin. Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
