Here's the thing to know about pairing masterwort with paroxetine (Paxil). This one isn't about how your body breaks the drug down, so the medicine won't get stronger or weaker. Instead, it's about your skin. Masterwort contains furanocoumarins, plant compounds that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Paroxetine is also listed as a drug that can occasionally cause sun sensitivity, so the worry is that the two together could add up and make you sunburn more easily.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not on strong patient studies. Still, it's reasonable to be a little extra careful with sunscreen and covering up if you use both. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Paroxetine Used For?

Brand names: Paxil CR, Paxil, Brisdelle

Paroxetine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspensions are approved in adults for major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The extended-release tablet forms (Paxil CR, paroxetine HCL CR, and paroxetine extended-release tablets) are approved in adults for MDD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Brisdelle (paroxetine 7.5 mg capsule) and generic paroxetine capsules are approved specifically for moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with menopause — not for any psychiatric condition. Paroxetine tablets are not approved for use in children.
