Dapsone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the gist of this one. Cassia cinnamon like Padang Cassia naturally contains a compound called coumarin, which in large amounts can stress the liver. Dapsone can already be hard on the liver in some people, so the worry is that stacking the two together might add up and increase the chance of liver trouble.

This is mostly a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not strong proof of harm. The cinnamon you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. The caution really applies to concentrated cinnamon supplements taken daily. If you ever notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, check in promptly. Before starting a cinnamon supplement, talk it over with your pharmacist or doctor.

Dapsone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down dapsone. In lab dish studies (not in people), a methanol extract of Padang cassia slowed that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in your body, dapsone might clear a little more slowly and build up, which could mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like headache, dizziness, nausea, or fatigue. Dapsone can also stress red blood cells, so anything that raises its levels is worth watching.

That said, this is only test-tube evidence, so it's far from certain. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is very unlikely to matter. Before starting a concentrated cinnamon supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Dapsone Used For?

Brand names: Dapsone, Avlosulfon, Aczone

Dapsone tablets are used to treat dermatitis herpetiformis (a chronic, intensely itchy blistering skin condition) and leprosy (all forms, except where proven resistance to dapsone exists). For leprosy, dapsone tablets are typically used in combination with other anti-leprosy medicines.

Aczone Gel (dapsone gel, 7.5%) and dapsone gel are indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older. This topical form is applied to the skin and is not used for leprosy or dermatitis herpetiformis.
