Pinellia Ternata and Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your cough syrup. The hydrocodone part is an opioid that calms coughing but also slows you down, and Pinellia ternata has been shown in animal studies to add to that sedative, sleepy effect. So if you pair them, you could feel extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or short of breath, and your breathing could become slower than normal. The pseudoephedrine half is actually a stimulant, so this concern is really about the hydrocodone side.

Keep in mind this comes from lab and animal research only, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because opioids carry real breathing risks, I'd run this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before using both.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine page

“Rezira and P-V-Tussin pair hydrocodone, an opioid, with pseudoephedrine, a decongestant, so the 241 supplements here pull in two directions and I would handle this combination with real care. Most entries either deepen the opioid's sedation (78 ingredients are CNS depressants, alcohol included) or stack stimulant effects onto the pseud…”

About Pinellia Ternata

What is Pinellia Ternata?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cough with phlegm
  • Morning sickness (traditional use)
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Throat discomfort

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
