Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
PHENOBARBITAL (Luminal)
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that caffeine can decrease the anticonvulsant activity of phenobarbital. The exact mechanism of this interaction is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your medication combines hyoscyamine with phenobarbital, and it's the phenobarbital part that matters here. Phenobarbital is used partly to help control seizures, and pu-erh tea naturally contains caffeine. The concern is a theoretical one: caffeine might slightly work against phenobarbital's calming, anticonvulsant effect, which in theory could make seizures a little more likely. This idea comes mostly from animal studies, and we don't fully understand how it works, so I wouldn't lose sleep over an occasional cup.
That said, phenobarbital is a medication where steady, reliable levels really count. If you drink pu-erh regularly or in large amounts, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
