Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about Tarka, which is a combo of trandolapril and verapamil: it's the verapamil part that matters here. Verapamil can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, raising caffeine levels by about 25%. Since pu-erh tea naturally contains caffeine, drinking it while on Tarka could leave more caffeine hanging around than usual.

In real life, that mostly means you might feel a bit more jittery, notice a faster or fluttery heartbeat, have trouble sleeping, or feel restless. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not strong proof, and a cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble for most folks. If you drink a lot of pu-erh or feel wired, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trandolapril, Verapamil page

“This is one of the supplement lists I would want a patient to read closely, not skim. Tarka combines trandolapril and verapamil to lower blood pressure, and most of these interactions pull on that same lever, either dropping pressure further than intended or working against the medicine altogether.”

Pu-erh tea is a fermented, aged form of tea made from the same plant as green and black tea.
