Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2D6 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down risperidone. The thinking here is that compounds in rooibos may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, risperidone could clear more slowly and build up, which can mean stronger effects and more side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, or restlessness.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab studies using concentrated rooibos extracts, not human research. A normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you regularly use strong rooibos supplements or extracts, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

Here's the gist for risperidone: your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine out. Lab tests (done in test tubes, not people) hint that concentrated rooibos extract may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more risperidone could linger in your system, which might mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, or stiffness and restlessness.

The important part: this is theoretical and based only on lab studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Drinking rooibos as a regular tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're thinking about concentrated rooibos capsules or extracts, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What Is Risperidone Used For?

Brand names: Risperdal, Perseris

Risperidone is prescribed for three main conditions: schizophrenia (a disorder affecting how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality), acute manic or mixed episodes in Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder — including aggression, self-injury, temper tantrums, and rapid mood swings.

For bipolar mania, it can be used alone or alongside lithium or valproate. It is approved for use in both adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents, depending on the condition being treated.
