Here's the simple version: primidone already tends to make people drowsy, especially when you first start it. It can leave you feeling sleepy, dizzy, or a little unsteady on your feet. Sassafras has its own mild sedating quality, so the worry is that taking the two together could pile on top of each other and make you more tired or foggy than usual.

I'll be honest though, this concern is theoretical, based on how these things behave rather than real cases in people. It isn't a sudden danger. The bigger reason I'd steer you away from sassafras is that it contains safrole, which the FDA banned in foods over cancer and liver concerns. Either way, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Primidone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INDUCERS.

In vitro research suggests that cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inducers might increase the cytotoxicity of safrole. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Also, it is not known if CYP1A2 inducers increase the toxicity of sassafras. Inducers of CYP1A2 include omeprazole (Prilosec).

Here's the situation with sassafras and your seizure medicine. Primidone can act as a CYP1A2 inducer, meaning it can speed up that liver enzyme. The concern on file isn't that sassafras changes your primidone levels. It's the other way around: by revving up CYP1A2, primidone could make the body convert safrole (the compound in sassafras) into more of its harmful, liver-damaging and possibly cancer-causing forms.

To be fair, this is based only on lab and animal research, not real human reports, so the actual risk in people isn't proven. Still, safrole is already FDA-banned in foods for safety reasons. The simplest move is to avoid internal sassafras and choose safrole-free products. Please run any herbal use by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Primidone Used For?

Brand name: Mysoline

Primidone — available as Mysoline and as generic primidone tablets — is used to control several types of epileptic seizures, including grand mal (major convulsive), psychomotor, and focal (partial) seizures. It can be used alone or alongside other seizure medicines.

Both Mysoline and primidone tablets may be particularly helpful for grand mal seizures that haven't responded to other anticonvulsant treatments.
