Schizonepeta and Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate

Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your Konvomep (omeprazole plus sodium bicarbonate). The concern on file is that a compound in Schizonepeta may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Omeprazole is partly handled by that pathway, so in theory the herb could clear it a bit faster and make it slightly less effective. That might show up as more heartburn, acid reflux, or stomach burning sneaking back.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from lab and animal studies, not real people, so this may not happen at all in practice. Omeprazole also relies heavily on a different enzyme (CYP2C19), which limits the impact here. Still, if you're considering this herb, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Schizonepeta is a mint-family herb long used in traditional Chinese medicine, usually as part of combination formulas for colds, fevers, and itchy skin conditions.
