Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the worry isn't really about your citalopram changing how it works. The interaction on file runs the other direction: taking other pills at the same time as thyroid extract can block the thyroid hormone from being absorbed properly. So your antidepressant could blunt how much thyroid hormone your body actually picks up, not the reverse.

The simple fix is timing. Thyroid products work best on an empty stomach, taken by themselves, with other medicines spaced out by at least 30 minutes to an hour. That keeps both doing their job. One extra note: since thyroid extract amounts aren't standardized and citalopram is its own medicine, it's worth running this combo by your pharmacist or doctor so they can set the best schedule for you.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
