Here's the gist for azathioprine (Imuran). This isn't about turmeric changing how azathioprine works or how strong it is. Instead, both can be hard on the liver, so the worry is that stacking them together might add up to more strain on that organ. Azathioprine already carries a known risk of liver irritation, so doctors often check liver blood tests while you're on it.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical and based on scattered case reports, mostly involving high-dose, highly absorbable curcumin products, not the sprinkle of turmeric in your cooking. Culinary amounts are very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about a concentrated supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

About Azathioprine

What Is Azathioprine Used For?

Brand names: Imuran, Azamune

Azathioprine is used alongside other medications to help prevent the body from rejecting a kidney transplant (renal homotransplantation). It is also used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis — reducing signs and symptoms in adults who have not responded well enough to other treatments.

Other pain relievers such as aspirin, NSAIDs, or low-dose steroids may be continued alongside azathioprine for rheumatoid arthritis. Combining azathioprine with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) has not been well studied and is not recommended.
