Turmeric and Lomefloxacin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Lomefloxacin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Lomefloxacin

Lomefloxacin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, turmeric might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist of this one: both turmeric and lomefloxacin (an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family) can, on rare occasions, be tough on the liver. The worry is that stacking them might add up and raise the small chance of liver irritation. Honestly, though, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on scattered case reports, not strong proof.

The reports of trouble usually involve concentrated, high-dose turmeric or curcumin products with absorption boosters, not the turmeric you sprinkle on dinner. Cooking amounts are very unlikely to be a problem. If you do take supplements, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor, and tell them right away if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue.

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)

2 of 2

Lomefloxacin also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).

Theoretically, turmeric might increase blood levels of OATP4C1 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the turmeric constituent curcumin competitively inhibits OATP4C1 transport. This transporter is expressed in the kidney and facilitates the renal excretion of certain drugs. Theoretically, taking turmeric might decrease renal excretion of OATP substrates.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the basic idea with lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Your kidneys help clear this drug out of your body, partly using transporter proteins. Lab research suggests curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, may block one of these kidney transporters (called OATP4C1). In theory, that could slow how fast lomefloxacin leaves your system and let blood levels creep up a bit.

If that happened, you might feel more of the drug's usual effects, things like nausea, dizziness, headache, or trouble sleeping. I want to be honest, though: this comes only from test-tube and animal studies, not from people, so it's quite theoretical. Normal cooking amounts of turmeric are very unlikely to matter. If you're taking concentrated curcumin capsules, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Turmeric

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric
  • Joint pain and arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Skin conditions

Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
