Turmeric and Metformin, Linagliptin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Metformin, Linagliptin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Metformin, Linagliptin

Metformin, Linagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, taking turmeric with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research and case reports suggest that curcumin, a turmeric constituent, can reduce blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that taking curcumin 475 mg daily for 10 days prior to taking glyburide 5 mg decreased postprandial glucose levels for up to 24 hours when compared with glyburide alone, despite the lack of a significant pharmacokinetic interaction. Other clinical studies in patients with diabetes show that taking curcumin daily can reduce blood glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version: your Jentadueto already lowers blood sugar (the metformin piece helps your body use insulin better, and the linagliptin piece bumps up your own blood-sugar-lowering hormones). Turmeric, in concentrated supplement doses, may nudge blood sugar down a little on its own. Stack the two and you could, in theory, drift lower than expected.

If that happens, watch for the usual low blood sugar signs: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, headache, or feeling unusually hungry or irritable. The evidence here is on the weaker side and mostly involves higher curcumin supplement doses, not the turmeric you sprinkle on food, so cooking amounts are unlikely to be a problem. Still, before starting a daily turmeric supplement, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Metformin, Linagliptin also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, turmeric might increase the absorption of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcuminoids and other constituents found in turmeric can inhibit P-glycoprotein expression and activity.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for folks taking Jentadueto (metformin plus linagliptin): turmeric carries a pump in your gut called P-glycoprotein, and lab and animal studies suggest curcumin (turmeric's main active part) may slow that pump down. In theory, that could let a little more of your medicine get absorbed. Neither metformin nor linagliptin is a prodrug, so the practical worry would be slightly stronger blood-sugar lowering, possibly more of metformin's usual stomach upset like nausea or diarrhea.

That said, this is only theoretical and based on test-tube and animal work, not real patients. The amount you'd get from cooking with turmeric is very unlikely to matter. If you're using a concentrated supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Turmeric

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric
  • Joint pain and arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Skin conditions

Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
