Vinpocetine and Danaparoid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Danaparoid

Danaparoid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Vinpocetine might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research shows that vinpocetine decreases red blood cell aggregation, as well as plasma and whole blood viscosity. This effect has been seen with intravenous vinpocetine 1 mg/kg and oral vinpocetine 30 mg daily. Vinpocetine also seems to have antiplatelet effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Danaparoid (Orgaran) is a blood thinner, an anticoagulant that lowers your blood's ability to clot. The concern here is simple: vinpocetine appears to have mild blood-thinning effects of its own. It can make red blood cells less sticky and may lower platelet activity. Stack that on top of danaparoid and you could tip the balance toward too much thinning.

In real life, that could show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slower to stop. The evidence behind this is fairly limited and rated moderate, so it's not a guarantee, just a reasonable caution. Please don't start or stop either one on your own. Have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can watch you for any signs of bleeding.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Danaparoid page

“Danshen, a Chinese herb sold for heart and circulation, is where I would start with danaparoid (Orgaran), an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots. Nearly everything here, 202 of the 218 ingredients on file, carries some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of its own, and stacking that on top of an anti…”
