Vinpocetine and Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Vinpocetine interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Vinpocetine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Theoretically, vinpocetine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that vinpocetine weakly inhibits CYP2C9. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist for Advil Dual Action, which pairs ibuprofen with acetaminophen. The ibuprofen part is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In a test tube, vinpocetine slowed that enzyme down a little. In theory, if your body clears ibuprofen more slowly, levels could creep up and you might see more of its usual side effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, or in heavier or long-term use, more strain on the kidneys.

That said, I'd keep this in perspective. This signal comes only from lab studies, the inhibition was weak, and it has never actually been reported in people. For occasional, short-term use most folks are fine, but if you take either one regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 2

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Vinpocetine might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research shows that vinpocetine decreases red blood cell aggregation, as well as plasma and whole blood viscosity. This effect has been seen with intravenous vinpocetine 1 mg/kg and oral vinpocetine 30 mg daily. Vinpocetine also seems to have antiplatelet effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with Advil Dual Action, which combines ibuprofen and acetaminophen. The ibuprofen part is what matters most here. As an NSAID, ibuprofen already thins the blood a little by reducing how well your platelets stick together, and it can irritate the stomach lining. Vinpocetine appears to have its own mild blood-thinning and antiplatelet action, so stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a bit higher.

In real life that might show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset. The evidence here is only moderate, but if you take both regularly, or if you're also on a blood thinner, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen page

“Advil Dual Action pairs ibuprofen, an NSAID with built-in stomach-bleeding risk, and acetaminophen, which the liver processes, so this interaction list deserves a careful read, not a skim. Most of the entries can add to bleeding risk, while smaller clusters put extra strain on the liver or kidneys.”
