Vinpocetine in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Unsafe

When used orally. In June 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement of warning that those who are pregnant or who could become pregnant should avoid vinpocetine. In rats, vinpocetine has been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage at a dose of 60 mg/kg daily and with reduced fetal weight and increased incidence of birth defects at a dose of 5-20 mg/kg. Based on pharmacokinetic analyses, a daily vinpocetine dose of 10 mg in humans is comparable to a daily dose of 5 mg/kg in rats.

Some Insulin (rDNA) Products Have a Food Rule — Vinpocetine Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Insulin (rDNA) says to take it with food. If you take Vinpocetine on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Insulin (rDNA) with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Insulin (rDNA) products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones.     Research on the use of intravenous vinpocetine to improve outcomes in patients recovering from ischemic stroke is mixed. It is unclear if oral vinpocetine is beneficial in these patients.
