Why this applies to Lesinurad

Lesinurad falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Theoretically, vinpocetine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that vinpocetine weakly inhibits CYP2C9. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down lesinurad (Zurampic). In test-tube studies, vinpocetine appears to weakly block that same enzyme. In theory, that could slow how fast lesinurad is cleared and let a bit more of it linger in your system.

If that happened, you might see more of lesinurad's known effects, and the one worth watching is kidney strain. Lesinurad already carries a warning about kidney problems, so anything nudging its levels up is worth a second look. That said, this is only laboratory data and has never been shown in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

Brand name: Zurampic

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
