Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic beet juice at 500 mg per capsule. Beet juice is the concentrated form of beetroot, which supplies betanin (the pigment that gives beets their deep red color) and nitrates — compounds your body converts to nitric oxide, a signaling molecule involved in blood vessel function and exercise response.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: pullulan (a plant-based capsule material), silica (an anti-caking agent), magnesium stearate (a lubricant), and rice flour (a filler).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Beet juice is possibly effective for athletic performance and for easing exercise-induced muscle soreness — the soreness you feel 24 to 72 hours after a hard workout. For other uses, the evidence is less clear.
It's rated possibly ineffective for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and we don't hold enough reliable evidence to rate it for high cholesterol levels (dyslipidemia) or cognitive function.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beet is a food eaten safely by many people, and short-term use of beet supplements appears well tolerated by most adults. That said, concentrated beet supplements lack the long-term safety data we have for beet as a food, so use them with caution if you're planning to take them regularly.
Common side effects are harmless: red or dark stools and red urine — the pigment passing through. In rare cases, very large amounts of beet have been linked to low blood calcium (hypocalcemia) and kidney damage.
One case report described black stools and mild gastrointestinal symptoms in an older person taking beet pills while also on blood thinners, though bleeding risk was deemed low. Pregnancy and lactation safety data for concentrated beet supplements are not on file — talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications against the search tool on this page. The biggest concerns are drugs processed by CYP3A4 (a liver enzyme) — beet may raise their blood levels — and drugs processed by CYP1A2 — beet may lower their levels.
Also mention blood pressure medications to your pharmacist, since beet contains nitrates that can relax blood vessels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're an athlete or active person looking to boost endurance or reduce muscle soreness after workouts, beet juice is possibly worth trying. But if you take any prescription medication — especially drugs broken down by your liver — check with us or your pharmacist first, since beet can alter how your body processes many common drugs.
It's generally well tolerated for short-term use, though concentrated supplements are less studied than beet as a food.

Beet Juice 500 mg by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Beet Juice 500 mg contains one active ingredient — organic beet juice — which has documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is with drugs metabolized by the enzyme CYP3A4 (a liver enzyme that breaks down many medications). In vitro research suggests beet's main pigment, betanin, can inhibit this enzyme in a dose-dependent way, theoretically raising the blood levels of affected drugs — similar to how the antifungal ketoconazole does.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beet juice also interacts with drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 (another liver enzyme). In this case, beet may induce or speed up the enzyme, theoretically lowering drug levels and reducing their effects — rated Minor severity.
Minor interactions are also documented with blood pressure medications. Beet contains nitrates, which relax blood vessel walls and can lower blood pressure; however, clinical studies on concentrated beetroot juice have found no significant blood pressure changes in different age groups, so the practical risk remains uncertain.
Altogether, these interactions span 850 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions before starting this supplement.

organic Beet Juice
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Beet and beetroot contain nitrates, which can cause vasodilation, potentially leading to lower blood pressure. However, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant impact on blood pressure or heart rate in different age groups. Other small clinical studies suggest that while beet consumption might transiently lower blood pressure due to vessel dilation, there's no consistent evidence of a lasting effect. Overall, the theoretical risk of reduced blood pressure due to beet's nitrate content exists, but studies generally indicate a low and temporary impact rather than a sustained decrease.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
