Pumpkin Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Hawaii Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pumpkin against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic pumpkin extract. Pumpkin has a long history as both food and traditional remedy, and this liquid form delivers the extract in a base of vegetable glycerin and pharmaceutical-grade alcohol.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pumpkin's effectiveness is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common prostate condition in older men.
For hair loss, parasitic infections, bladder pain (interstitial cystitis), and urinary tract infections, the evidence is insufficient — we don't have enough reliable data to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as food is generally well tolerated. As a concentrated supplement, most adults tolerate it, but the safety data on concentrated products isn't as robust.
The most common side effects are mild: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported.
There are also two case reports of hair loss occurring 1–3 weeks after eating very bitter pumpkin or squash, attributed to high levels of a compound called cucurbitacin, which is found in wild varieties — regular cultivated pumpkin shouldn't carry this risk. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin supplements to know whether they're safe.
Pumpkin as a food is fine, but before taking a supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium for mood stabilization, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — pumpkin may affect how your body handles it and your dose might need adjusting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hawaii Pharm's Pumpkin extract may be worth considering if you have benign prostatic hyperplasia and want to explore a plant-based option. If you take lithium, you'll need to clear it with your doctor first.
Otherwise, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement fits your situation.

Pumpkin by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Pumpkin extract has one documented interaction to watch for: it may affect how your body clears lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication.
Pumpkin is thought to have mild water-pill (diuretic) properties, which theoretically could reduce how much lithium your kidneys excrete, potentially raising its level in your blood. If you take lithium, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
