Olanzapine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the gist with 5-HTP and olanzapine (Zyprexa): both can nudge serotonin levels in your brain, so taking them together could add up. The worry is something called serotonin syndrome, where too much serotonin builds up. Signs to watch for include feeling agitated or restless, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or shaking.

The good news is this is mostly a theoretical concern based on how these work, not something doctors have actually seen happen with 5-HTP in real people. Olanzapine only mildly touches serotonin, so the real-world risk is likely low. Still, since both play in the same sandbox, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding 5-HTP, and don't stop your olanzapine on your own.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
