Oxcarbazepine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.

Here's the simple version: oxcarbazepine can already make people feel drowsy, dizzy, or a little foggy, especially when you first start it or bump up the dose. 5-HTP has also been linked to drowsiness in studies. So the concern is that stacking the two together could leave you feeling extra sleepy or unsteady, with the sedation adding up.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is. It's theoretical, based on how both can cause sleepiness, not on solid studies of the two combined. It doesn't change how well your seizure medicine works. Still, since being overly drowsy or off-balance matters more with a seizure medication, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding 5-HTP, and don't stop your oxcarbazepine on your own.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
