Adrafinil + Citalopram
Citalopram brand name: Celexa.
Citalopram falls into 2 drug categories that Adrafinil can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, adrafinil might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C19 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Adrafinil interacts with whole categories of medication. Citalopram falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Adrafinil in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Citalopram
Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Adrafinil interacts with.
Adrafinil is a precursor to the stimulant prescription drug modafinil. Modafinil has been shown to inhibit CYP2C19 activity in vitro.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with citalopram (Celexa) and adrafinil. Your liver turns adrafinil into modafinil, and lab studies suggest modafinil can slow down an enzyme called CYP2C19, which is one of the pathways that helps clear citalopram from your body. If that enzyme works more slowly, citalopram levels could drift higher than expected.
In plain terms, that might mean a bit more of the usual SSRI effects: nausea, trouble sleeping, jitteriness, or feeling more keyed up (and adrafinil is a stimulant on top of that, so the wired feeling could stack). I want to be honest though, this is theoretical and based only on lab data, not real patient reports, so it may never cause a problem. Still, please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Citalopram also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Adrafinil is a precursor to the stimulant prescription drug modafinil. Modafinil has been shown to weakly induce CYP3A4 activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa). Your liver turns adrafinil into modafinil, and modafinil can mildly speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, one of the pathways that helps break down citalopram. In theory, that faster breakdown could lower your citalopram levels a little, which might make it work less well. If that happened, you could notice your depression symptoms creeping back, or feel less steady than usual.
Honestly, this one is mostly theory rather than something proven in real patients, and the enzyme effect is described as weak, so I wouldn't panic. Still, adrafinil is unregulated and hard on the liver. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with citalopram so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

Natural Medicines records Citalopram as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Adrafinil — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
