About Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic

What Is Sulfacetamide Ophthalmic Used For?

Brand name: AK-Sulf

Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Solution USP, 10% is used to treat conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other superficial infections on the surface of the eye caused by susceptible bacteria. These include bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella species, and others.

It is also used alongside systemic (oral or injectable) sulfonamide antibiotic therapy in the treatment of trachoma, a serious bacterial eye infection. It is important to note that this medication does not work against all types of bacteria — it does not provide adequate coverage against Neisseria species, Serratia marcescens, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and some staph bacteria are fully resistant to it.
