Ashwagandha and Clobazam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Clobazam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Clobazam

Clobazam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Ashwagandha seems to have sedative effects. Theoretically, this may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Clobazam already calms down overactive electrical signals in the brain, which is exactly why it helps control seizures. Ashwagandha tends to have its own mild calming, sleep-promoting effect. Put the two together and those quieting effects could stack up, so you might feel more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady than usual.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is: it's theoretical, based on how each one works rather than on solid studies, so it may not cause any real problem for you. Still, since Clobazam is a seizure medicine and added sedation matters, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding ashwagandha, and don't change your Clobazam on your own.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Clobazam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines.
There is preliminary evidence that ashwagandha might have an additive effect with diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin). This may also occur with other benzodiazepines.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: ashwagandha is often used to calm you down and help with sleep, and Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) is a benzodiazepine that already has a quieting, sedating effect on the brain. Stacking the two together could add up, so you might feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than usual. Clobazam isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about one activating the other. It's simply two calming things layering on top of each other.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based mostly on how these work, not strong human studies. So don't panic. Just don't start ashwagandha on your own while taking a seizure medicine. Run it by your pharmacist or neurologist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clobazam page

“Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan, Frisium) is a benzodiazepine for seizures, so extra sedation is a real safety hazard rather than a nuisance, and that is what most of this list adds. The great majority of these supplements and herbs deepen drowsiness, alcohol in any form among the most serious pairings.”
