Ashwagandha and Flibanserin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Flibanserin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Flibanserin

Flibanserin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Ashwagandha seems to have sedative effects. Theoretically, this may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Addyi (flibanserin) already has a calming, drowsy side to it, which is why it's usually taken at bedtime. It can cause sleepiness, dizziness, and low blood pressure, especially if you stand up too fast. Ashwagandha is thought to have its own mild sedative quality, so layering the two together might leave you feeling more groggy, lightheaded, or out of it than usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on how each works rather than solid studies, so it may not cause trouble for everyone. Still, because flibanserin already carries warnings about fainting and low blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't drive until you know how you feel.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Flibanserin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Addyi (flibanserin). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down. In lab studies (test tube only, not people), ashwagandha appeared to speed that enzyme up. If that held true in the body, it could clear flibanserin a little faster and leave you with slightly less of it working, which might mean less help with your low desire.

The honest truth is that this is theoretical and rated minor. Flibanserin is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped the other way. We simply don't have human data here. Still, since alcohol and fainting cautions already apply to Addyi, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with ashwagandha.

About Flibanserin

What Is Flibanserin Used For?

Brand name: Addyi

Addyi is approved to treat acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) — a condition where low sexual desire causes significant distress or relationship difficulty — in women under 65. Addyi is not intended for use in men, and it is not a sexual performance enhancer. It is also not meant for HSDD that is caused by a medical condition, a psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or another medication.
