Ashwagandha has demonstrated immunostimulant effects in humans. Animal research has shown that ashwagandha can attenuate the immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide.

Here's the idea worth knowing: ashwagandha can gently rev up the immune system, while thalidomide works partly by calming and adjusting immune activity. In theory, those two could pull in opposite directions, so ashwagandha might blunt how well thalidomide does its job. For someone using thalidomide for multiple myeloma or for leprosy skin flares (ENL), that could mean the medicine doesn't control things as well as it should.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern comes from lab and animal studies, not solid human data, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because thalidomide treats serious conditions, I'd run any ashwagandha plans past your oncologist or pharmacist before starting it rather than guessing.

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb most often taken to help with stress, anxiety, and sleep, and some small studies suggest it may help, though the evidence is still limited. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but it should be avoided in pregnancy and used cautiously by people with thyroid or liver problems. About Thalidomide

What Is Thalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Thalomid

Thalomid (thalidomide capsules) is approved for two uses. First, it is used in combination with dexamethasone to treat newly diagnosed multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Second, Thalomid is used on its own to treat the skin symptoms of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur in people with leprosy. It can also be used as ongoing maintenance therapy to prevent ENL from coming back. Note: Thalomid is not approved as the sole treatment for ENL when moderate to severe nerve inflammation (neuritis) is also present.
