Esomeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Nexium (esomeprazole) and ayahuasca. Your body uses liver enzymes, including one called CYP3A4, to help break down esomeprazole. The beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca can block that enzyme, at least in lab tests. If that happened in a person, esomeprazole could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean slightly stronger effects or more side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only theoretical and based on test-tube work, not on real people. Esomeprazole is also generally forgiving, so a small shift usually isn't dangerous. Ayahuasca itself carries far bigger risks. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything.

What Is Esomeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Nexium

Esomeprazole treats problems caused by excess stomach acid. It's used to heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), control GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms like heartburn, and protect the stomach lining in people at risk for ulcers caused by NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen).

It's also used as part of a three-drug combination to wipe out H. pylori — a stomach bacteria linked to ulcers — and for people with rare conditions that cause the stomach to overproduce acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
