Simvastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for these two. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear simvastatin out of your system. The beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca (like harmine) have been shown in lab dish studies to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more simvastatin could linger in your blood than expected.

What might that look like? Mainly the usual statin complaints turned up a notch: muscle aches, weakness, or in rare cases more serious muscle breakdown. I want to be honest though, this is only theoretical right now and hasn't actually been seen in people. Still, ayahuasca carries its own real risks, so please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with it.

About Simvastatin

What Is Simvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Zocor

Simvastatin tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, and certain inherited cholesterol disorders, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) in adults and children aged 10 and older, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) in adults.

In adults who already have coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes and are at high risk for heart events, simvastatin is also used to reduce the risk of death from heart disease, non-fatal heart attack, stroke, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Zocor is one brand-name product containing simvastatin and carries these same indications.
