Bay Leaf and Lorazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Lorazepam

Lorazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bay Leaf interacts with.

Theoretically, taking bay leaf in large amounts may enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of sedatives.
Bay leaf contains methyl eugenol. Animal research shows that methyl eugenol has sedative properties. Avoid concomitant use.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: lorazepam (Ativan) already slows down your brain to calm anxiety or help you sleep. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, at least in animal studies, seems to have its own mild sedating effect. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up and make you more drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or unsteady than you'd expect from your lorazepam dose alone.

Now, the honest part: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal research, not real human cases. The pinch of bay leaf in your soup or stew is not going to do this. The caution is really about concentrated bay leaf supplements or essential oils. If you're considering those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first. Never adjust your Ativan on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lorazepam page

“Lorazepam (Ativan) works by slowing brain activity, and that is exactly why this list deserves real caution. Of the 119 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, 78 are themselves nervous-system depressants, so adding them can deepen drowsiness or, at the extreme, slow breathing.”

About Lorazepam

What Is Lorazepam Used For?

Brand name: Ativan

Lorazepam tablets (Ativan and generic) and the oral solution are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including anxiety that comes with depressive symptoms. Loreev XR, an extended-release capsule, is specifically indicated for adults with anxiety disorders who are already stable on lorazepam tablets taken three times daily.

Ativan and generic lorazepam injections are used in two additional situations: treating status epilepticus (a medical emergency involving prolonged or repeated seizures) and as a pre-surgery medication in adults to produce sedation, ease anxiety, and reduce memory of events on the day of surgery.
