Lorazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the thing about pairing kava with lorazepam (Ativan): both calm down brain activity, so taking them together stacks one sedative on top of another. Lorazepam already slows things down to ease anxiety, and kava's kavalactones seem to push in the same direction. Put them together and you can end up more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than you'd expect.

That added sedation matters. We're talking deeper tiredness, slowed reflexes, poor coordination, and trouble driving or concentrating safely. Expert anxiety guidelines specifically say not to combine benzodiazepines like lorazepam with kava. There's also kava's separate liver concern to keep in mind. Please don't change anything on your own, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. However, kava has been linked to rare but serious liver damage, so it should be used with caution, avoided by people with liver problems, and only used after talking with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Lorazepam

What Is Lorazepam Used For?

Brand name: Ativan

Lorazepam tablets (Ativan and generic) and the oral solution are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including anxiety that comes with depressive symptoms. Loreev XR, an extended-release capsule, is specifically indicated for adults with anxiety disorders who are already stable on lorazepam tablets taken three times daily.

Ativan and generic lorazepam injections are used in two additional situations: treating status epilepticus (a medical emergency involving prolonged or repeated seizures) and as a pre-surgery medication in adults to produce sedation, ease anxiety, and reduce memory of events on the day of surgery.
