Methyclothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the gist: methyclothiazide is a water pill that already works to bring your blood pressure down. Concentrated breadfruit leaf products (teas or extracts, not the fruit you eat as food) may also nudge blood pressure lower. In animal studies, breadfruit leaf slowed the heart rate and weakened the heart's pumping force. Stack that on top of your diuretic and, in theory, your pressure could dip too far.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when standing up quickly. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal data, not human studies. Eating breadfruit as a regular food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're thinking about leaf supplements, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
