Caffeine and Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Caffeine interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Caffeine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Caffeine interacts with.

Theoretically, caffeine may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, it might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents; however, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's an interesting wrinkle with this particular product: it already contains caffeine right in the formula, alongside aspirin (a blood thinner that keeps platelets from sticking together) and Dover's powder. Lab studies suggest caffeine itself has a mild antiplatelet effect, so in theory, stacking extra caffeine on top of the aspirin could slightly nudge up your bleeding risk. Think easier bruising, a nosebleed that takes longer to stop, or stomach upset.

The honest truth, though, is that this has never actually been shown to cause problems in people. It comes only from test-tube and animal data, so it's more of a footnote than a real worry. Still, if you drink a lot of coffee or energy drinks on top of this combo, mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.

STIMULANT DRUGS

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something easy to miss: this combination product (Acedoval, Dovacet) already contains caffeine right in it, alongside aspirin and Dover's powder. So if you add a separate caffeine source like coffee, energy drinks, or a caffeine pill on top, you're essentially stacking caffeine on caffeine. That's the heart of this interaction.

Taking more caffeine together with this medicine can push the stimulant effects higher, meaning you may feel jittery, notice a racing or pounding heart, get a headache, feel anxious, or have trouble sleeping. This concern is based on expert reasoning rather than hard studies, so it's not an emergency, just worth being aware of. A normal cup of coffee likely isn't a big deal, but loading up on caffeine is. If you're unsure how much is safe, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
