Caffeine and Moclobemide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

Why this applies to Moclobemide

Moclobemide falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Caffeine interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Moclobemide is a reversible MAO-A inhibitor used for depression, and it sits in the same family as the older MAOIs. The concern here is mostly about your blood pressure. Caffeine is a stimulant, and in lab studies it can lightly block MAO too. So in theory, pairing big caffeine loads with an MAOI could nudge your blood pressure up and, in rare cases, push it dangerously high (a hypertensive crisis with pounding headache, chest pressure, or a racing heart).

The good news: this is theoretical, and the one case report involved someone drinking 10 to 12 cups of coffee a day. A normal cup or two is unlikely to cause trouble for most folks. Still, since moclobemide affects blood pressure regulation, it's smart to keep your caffeine modest and steady, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor if you notice jitters, headaches, or a fast heartbeat.

  • Mental alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Improving athletic performance
  • Headache and migraine relief
  • Boosting focus and concentration
  • Weight loss aid

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products. In moderate amounts it can boost alertness and reduce tiredness for most healthy adults, but too much can cause jitteriness, a racing heart, and sleep problems. Pregnant women and people with heart conditions or anxiety should be especially careful and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
