Here's the gist with lamotrigine (Lamictal) and the dream herb. This isn't about how your body breaks the medication down. Instead, the concern is simply additive: both can have a calming, sedating effect on the brain. Calea zacatechichi has shown some central nervous system depression in animals and a few people, so stacking it on top of lamotrigine could, in theory, leave you more drowsy, dizzy, or mentally foggy than usual.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not on solid human studies, and it's rated as minor. Still, if you notice extra sleepiness or unsteadiness, that's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Calea zacatechichi, often called 'dream herb,' is a Mexican plant traditionally used to encourage vivid dreams and to treat digestive complaints and fever. Human research is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven, and its safety has not been carefully studied. It tastes very bitter, can cause nausea, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Lamotrigine

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.

For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.
