Flibanserin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cascara Sagrada interacts with.

Theoretically, cascara sagrada might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that cascara sagrada can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for Addyi (flibanserin): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication. Cascara sagrada may gently rev up that enzyme, which in theory could move flibanserin out of your system a little faster and make it work less well for your low desire concerns. So if anything, the worry here is weaker benefit, not more side effects.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from lab studies, and the effect was much weaker than known enzyme boosters like rifampin. In real life it may not matter much at all. Still, since these meds are taken regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Cascara sagrada is a stimulant laxative made from the aged bark of a Pacific Northwest tree, used mainly for short-term relief of constipation. Because it can cause cramping, dehydration, and electrolyte problems—and was removed from over-the-counter laxative products in the U.S. due to safety concerns—it should only be used briefly, if at all, and with guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Flibanserin Used For?

Brand name: Addyi

Addyi is approved to treat acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) — a condition where low sexual desire causes significant distress or relationship difficulty — in women under 65. "Acquired" means the low desire developed after a period of normal desire; "generalized" means it happens regardless of the situation or partner.

Addyi is not intended for use in men, and it is not a sexual performance enhancer. It is also not meant for HSDD that is caused by a medical condition, a psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or another medication.
