Cinchona + Fluoxetine
Fluoxetine brand names: Prozac, Sarafem.
Fluoxetine falls into 2 drug categories that Cinchona can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking cinchona might inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Cinchona interacts with whole categories of medication. Fluoxetine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Cinchona in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Fluoxetine
Fluoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cinchona interacts with.
Quinidine, a constituent of cinchona, inhibits CYP2D6-mediated metabolism in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for fluoxetine (Prozac). Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. Cinchona bark contains quinidine, which is a well-known blocker of that same enzyme. So in theory, pairing the two could slow how fast you break down fluoxetine and let more of it build up in your system.
If that happened, you might notice stronger fluoxetine effects or side effects, things like jitteriness, trouble sleeping, nausea, or feeling on edge. I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the chemicals behave rather than real-world reports. Still, cinchona itself can be risky, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your fluoxetine on your own.

QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS
2 of 2Fluoxetine also falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS.
Quinidine and quinine, which are constituents of cinchona, prolong the QT interval.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with combining cinchona and fluoxetine (Prozac). Cinchona bark naturally contains quinine and quinidine, and both of these can stretch out a part of your heart's electrical cycle called the QT interval. Fluoxetine, on its own, can also nudge the QT interval a little longer. Put the two together and you may get an additive effect, which in rare cases raises the risk of an irregular heart rhythm.
I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than a string of reported cases. For most people it won't cause trouble, but if you've had heart rhythm problems, low potassium or magnesium, or take other QT-affecting drugs, it matters more. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fluoxetine page
“Grapefruit is the surprise at the top of fluoxetine's (Prozac) supplement list. In large amounts it can stretch the QT interval, the electrical pause between heartbeats, and fluoxetine, a widely prescribed antidepressant, can do the same, raising the odds of a dangerous rhythm.”

About Cinchona
What is Cinchona?
- Malaria (historical/traditional)
- Fever
- Leg cramps and restless legs
- Digestive upset and loss of appetite
- Bitter tonic
Cinchona bark is the natural source of quinine and has been used for centuries to treat malaria and fever, but the bark itself is not standardized and can be unpredictable and risky. Modern medicine uses purified, dose-controlled quinine instead, and the supplement form carries real dangers, including serious heart and blood problems. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.
About Fluoxetine
What Is Fluoxetine Used For?
Brand names: Prozac, Sarafem
Fluoxetine is approved to treat four conditions: major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa (a binge-eating and purging disorder), and panic disorder — with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that feel hard to escape).
It works for adults across all four conditions, and for children and teens with depression (ages 8–18) and OCD (ages 7–17).

Fluoxetine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Fluoxetine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Cinchona — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
