Here's the gist for imipramine (Tofranil). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break this antidepressant down. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which lab work and some early human data suggest can slow that same enzyme. If CYP2D6 is slowed, imipramine may not clear as quickly and levels could creep up.

What might that feel like? More of imipramine's usual side effects, things like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness on standing, drowsiness, or a faster heartbeat. With tricyclics, bigger jumps can also affect heart rhythm, so this is worth respecting. That said, this interaction is only theoretical right now, not proven in real patients. Please don't change anything on your own. Check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist for imipramine (Tofranil). This herb may contain berberine, which in early research can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Since imipramine is partly handled by that pathway, the theory is that Corydalis could let a bit more imipramine linger in your body. Imipramine is an active medicine (not a prodrug), so higher levels would mean stronger effects and more side effects, things like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness when standing, blurred vision, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave, not on real human cases with imipramine. Still, because tricyclics can be touchy, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them rather than guessing on your own.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
