Lurasidone falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Cowhage interacts with.

Theoretically, use of cowhage might decrease the clinical effects of antipsychotic drugs.
Cowhage contains levodopa. Use of levodopa might counteract the antidopaminergic effects of antipsychotic medications.

Here's the basic tension between these two. Lurasidone (Latuda) calms down overactive dopamine signaling in the brain, which is how it helps with schizophrenia and bipolar depression. Cowhage, on the other hand, is a natural source of L-dopa, the building block your body turns into dopamine. So in theory, cowhage could push dopamine activity up at the same time Latuda is trying to settle it down, working against each other.

If that happened, you might notice Latuda not controlling symptoms as well as it should. I'll be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than on real cases. Still, I wouldn't pair them on your own. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding cowhage, since both affect dopamine in serious ways.

What Is Lurasidone Used For?

Brand name: Latuda

Lurasidone hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, and to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) in adults and children aged 10 to 17. Latuda is one of the brand names under which lurasidone is available as a tablet.

For bipolar depression, lurasidone can be used on its own (monotherapy) in adults and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17, or used alongside lithium or valproate (adjunctive therapy) in adults.
