SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Alosetron
Alosetron falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with Alosetron (Lotronex). It actually works by blocking serotonin's effect on 5-HT3 receptors in your gut, which is what slows down those urgent, diarrhea-heavy IBS symptoms. Fermented wheat germ extract, on the other hand, has been shown in animal studies only to nudge serotonin levels up in the brain.
So in theory, pairing them could add a little more serotonin activity to your system. Honestly though, this is very speculative and based on lab and animal data, not real patient cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Since alosetron is already a restricted medication with careful monitoring, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding this supplement, and let them make the call.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alosetron page
“Alosetron (Lotronex) treats severe diarrhea-predominant IBS by acting on serotonin receptors in the gut, and that is where most of its 38 supplement interactions come from. Twenty of the ingredients, 5-HTP among them, raise serotonin on their own, and stacking them on a serotonin-acting drug is a combination I want you to treat with re…”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
