SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Phenelzine Sulfate
Phenelzine Sulfate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: phenelzine (Nardil) is an MAO inhibitor, which means it already raises serotonin and other brain chemicals by slowing how your body breaks them down. Fermented wheat germ extract has shown, in animal studies only, that it may bump up brain serotonin too. So stacking the two could, in theory, push serotonin higher than intended.
If serotonin climbs too far, you could see things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shakiness, high blood pressure, or confusion. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not strong human evidence. Since MAOIs are touchy drugs with many interactions, please run this supplement past your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
About Phenelzine
What Is Phenelzine Used For?
Brand name: Nardil
Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).
It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
