Lesinurad falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Goji interacts with.

Theoretically, goji berry might inhibit CYP2C9 and reduce metabolism of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that goji berry tincture and juice inhibit CYP2C9 enzymes. Additionally, multiple case reports suggest that goji berry concentrated tea and juice inhibit the metabolism of warfarin, a CYP2C9 substrate. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.

Here's the gist for Lesinurad (Zurampic). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to break this medication down. Goji berry, in concentrated forms like strong teas, juices, or supplement extracts, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, Lesinurad could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which in theory could nudge up the risk of its side effects, including kidney-related issues (lesinurad already carries a warning about kidney problems, especially at higher doses).

Now, the honest part: this is mostly theoretical, based on lab studies and a few case reports with a different drug (warfarin). A small handful of goji berries as food is very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated goji products, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
