Goji and Rescinnamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Rescinnamine

Rescinnamine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goji interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of goji root bark, but not goji fruit, with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and in vitro research suggest that goji root bark has hypotensive effects. However, goji fruit juice does not appear to reduce systolic or diastolic blood pressure in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Rescinnamine (Moderil) is an older medicine that lowers blood pressure. The concern on file isn't with the goji fruit you'd eat or sip as juice. It's with goji root bark, a different part of the plant that, in lab and animal studies only, looked like it might lower blood pressure on its own. If that effect carried over to people, stacking it on top of Rescinnamine could add up and push your pressure too low. That might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint when you stand.

To be clear, this is theoretical, and goji fruit juice hasn't actually lowered blood pressure in people. So enjoy the berries normally. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before using a concentrated goji root bark product.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rescinnamine page

“American hellebore is the entry I would flag first for anyone taking rescinnamine (Moderil). Even small amounts of the herb drop blood pressure sharply and can slow the heart, and rescinnamine is already working to bring pressure down.”

Goji berries are a nutritious fruit rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and plant polysaccharides, and they are safe for most people as a food.
