Green Tea and Alogliptin, Metformin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Alogliptin, Metformin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Alogliptin, Metformin

Alogliptin, Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, taking green tea with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control.
Concomitant use of green tea and antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control. The data are conflicting. Reports claim that green tea and/or caffeine, a constituent of green tea, might increase or decrease blood sugar.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Here's the honest picture with Kazano (the alogliptin and metformin combo) and green tea. The connection here is pretty loose. Green tea, and the caffeine in it, has been reported to nudge blood sugar in either direction depending on the study, and the data simply don't agree with each other. So we can't say it reliably pushes your sugar up or down.

For most people, enjoying a normal cup or two of green tea alongside your medication isn't going to throw things off. Concentrated green tea extract pills are where I'd be a bit more cautious, since they're a much bigger dose. If you take those, just keep an eye on your glucose readings and watch for shaky, sweaty low-sugar feelings or higher-than-usual numbers. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any green tea supplement.

Theoretically, metformin might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that metformin can reduce caffeine metabolism. Theoretically, concomitant use can increase caffeine serum concentrations and the risk of caffeine adverse effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a quick heads-up on the green tea side of your Kazano (which combines alogliptin and metformin). This interaction is actually about the caffeine in green tea, not your diabetes medicine itself. Lab and animal studies hint that the metformin part may slow down how your body clears caffeine. In plain terms, the caffeine could linger a bit longer than usual.

If that happens, you might feel the typical caffeine jitters: a racing heart, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or an upset stomach. The good news is this is only a theoretical, minor concern based on weak evidence, and a normal cup or two of green tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated green tea extracts pack more caffeine, so be more mindful there. If you notice you're feeling wired, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alogliptin, Metformin page

“Kazano combines alogliptin and metformin to lower blood sugar, and nearly everything on this list pushes on that same lever, so I treat these pairings with real caution. Most entries are herbs and supplements that lower glucose on their own, and stacked on the drug they raise the risk of hypoglycemia, a sugar drop steep enough to cause…”

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
