Most entries are herbs and supplements that lower glucose on their own, and stacked on the drug they raise the risk of hypoglycemia, a sugar drop steep enough to cause shakiness or confusion. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe hypoglycemia in people and should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medicine.

The other major entry, activated charcoal, soaks up oral drugs in the gut, and several thick fibers can similarly blunt metformin's absorption, so keep those well apart from your dose. A handful, niacin-based products among them, push blood sugar up instead.
