Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ryzodeg combines two insulins, a fast-acting one (insulin aspart) and a long-acting one (insulin degludec), that work together to lower your blood sugar. The concern here with green tea is pretty mild. Some reports suggest green tea or its caffeine might nudge blood sugar slightly up or down, but honestly the evidence is conflicting and the effect is considered minor and unlikely to cause real trouble.

For most folks, a regular cup or two of green tea won't throw off your insulin. Concentrated green tea extract pills are more of a wildcard. Since insulin already lowers blood sugar, just keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion). If you're starting an extract, check your numbers more closely and let your pharmacist or doctor know.

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
