Ivermectin brand names: Stromectol, Mectizan, Sklice, Soolantra.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Guarana and Ivermectin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Ivermectin states a food rule worth keeping to, and the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Guarana and Ivermectin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Ivermectin and Guarana in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Ivermectin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Ivermectin is filed under 4 classifications — including topical drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, oral drugs. Guarana has documented interactions with 41 drug classes — the most serious being ephedrine (major), adenosine (adenocard) (moderate) and anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Ivermectin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Guarana and Ivermectin May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 4 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Reported for Guarana but not commonly for Ivermectin: trouble concentrating, fainting, dependence or withdrawal symptoms and a stroke or mini-stroke.

Effects for Ivermectin come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Guarana come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 6,298 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Ivermectin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

Guarana in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When consumed in amounts commonly found in foods. Due to the caffeine content of guarana, intake should be closely monitored during pregnancy to ensure moderate consumption. Although it is not considered a teratogen, caffeine crosses the placenta and causes dose-dependent increases in fetal blood concentrations. The use of caffeine during pregnancy is controversial; however, moderate consumption has not been associated with clinically important adverse fetal effects. In some studies, consuming amounts over 200 mg daily is associated with a significantly increased risk of miscarriage. This increased risk may be most likely to occur in individuals with genotypes that confer a slow rate of caffeine metabolism. According to a review by Health Canada, and a subsequent large meta-analysis conducted in the US, caffeine can be safely consumed in doses up to 300 mg daily without an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, preterm birth, fetal growth retardation, or congenital malformations. However, some research has also found that intrauterine exposure to even modest amounts of caffeine, based on maternal blood levels during the first trimester, is associated with a shorter stature in children ages 4-8 years. Advise individuals to keep caffeine consumption below 300 mg daily during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in amounts over 300 mg daily. Although it is not considered a teratogen, caffeine crosses the placenta and causes dose-dependent increases in fetal blood concentrations. Consumption of caffeine in amounts over 300 mg daily is associated with a significantly increased risk of miscarriage in some studies. Advise keeping caffeine consumption from all sources below 300 mg daily. High maternal doses of caffeine throughout pregnancy have resulted in symptoms of caffeine withdrawal in newborn infants. High doses of caffeine have also been associated with spontaneous abortion, premature delivery, and low birth weight.

Lactation Possibly Safe

When used orally in amounts commonly found in foods. Due to the caffeine content of guarana, intake should be closely monitored when breast-feeding. Breast milk concentrations of caffeine are thought to be approximately 50% of serum concentrations.

Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When used orally in large amounts. Consumption of guarana might cause irritability and increased bowel activity in nursing infants. Large doses or excessive intake of guarana should be avoided when breast-feeding.

How to take them

Some Ivermectin Products Have a Food Rule — Guarana Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Ivermectin says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Guarana included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Ivermectin on its own and move Guarana to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Ivermectin products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

Patients should take tablets on an empty stomach with water.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Ivermectin — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. Read the label on DailyMed ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.

Paullinia cupana · Sapindaceae · Seeds · Capsules, tablets, powders, energy drinks, liquid extracts

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Guarana is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Guarana record says about it on its own.

Guarana: dosing

There is no official standardized dose for guarana. The caffeine content varies widely between products, so the strength of one supplement may be very different from another. The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and to count guarana toward your total daily caffeine intake from all sources. Avoid combining several caffeine-containing products at once.

Taking Guarana and Ivermectin Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Guarana with Ivermectin?
We do not list a known interaction between Guarana and Ivermectin. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Guarana and Ivermectin have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 10 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Should I take Guarana and Ivermectin at the same time of day?
At least one FDA label for a product containing Ivermectin says to take it on an empty stomach, and supplements are usually taken with a meal — so taking them together at breakfast is the easy mistake. Where that applies, keep Ivermectin on its own and move Guarana to a meal later in the day. Food instructions belong to the product rather than the ingredient, so check the directions on your own box. This is about absorption, not an interaction.
How was the Guarana and Ivermectin combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Ivermectin is filed under 4 classifications, and Guarana has documented interactions with 41 drug classes — none of Ivermectin's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Guarana interact with any other medications?
Yes. Guarana has 655 documented drug interactions in our database — Ivermectin is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Ivermectin interact with any supplements?
Yes. Ivermectin has documented interactions with 58 supplements in our database — Guarana is not one of them. The Ivermectin interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
