CARBAMAZEPINE (Tegretol)

Theoretically, guarana might reduce the effects of carbamazepine and increase the risk for convulsions.
Animal research suggests that taking caffeine can lower the anticonvulsant effects of carbamazepine and can induce seizures when given to animals in doses above 400 mg/kg. Human research has shown that taking caffeine 300 mg in three divided doses along with carbamazepine 200 mg reduces the bioavailability of carbamazepine by 32% and prolongs the plasma half-life of carbamazepine two-fold in healthy individuals.

Here's the gist: guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, and there's some thinking that loading up on caffeine could work against your carbamazepine. In one small human study, caffeine lowered how much carbamazepine got absorbed (by about a third) while changing how long it stuck around in the body. Animal studies hint that high caffeine doses may make seizures more likely. So the worry is a weaker seizure-control effect, which for someone with epilepsy or trigeminal neuralgia could mean breakthrough seizures or returning nerve pain.

That said, this is mostly theoretical and based on limited research, so don't panic. A coffee here and there is different from regular high-dose guarana energy products. Since carbamazepine is a medication where steady levels really matter, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding guarana.

About Carbamazepine

What Is Carbamazepine Used For?

Brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv

Carbamazepine is used to treat certain types of seizures — including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and mixed seizure patterns. It works best for those specific seizure types; it does not appear to control absence (petit mal) seizures.

It is also prescribed to relieve the intense facial pain of trigeminal neuralgia — a nerve condition that causes sudden, severe pain along the face. It is not a general painkiller and shouldn't be used for ordinary aches and pains.
